Man charged with arson after Moline apartment fire

UPDATE: An East Moline man was arrested and charged with aggravated arson and residential arson after a fire at the Moline Enterprise Lofts.

James Byars, 61, is in Rock Island County Jail pending a pre-trial detention hearing.

EARLIER UPDATE: Moline Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Moline Enterprise Lofts, at 1871 River Drive, a 69-unit apartment complex, on Wednesday night, Feb. 21.

The department responded to the 9:04 p.m. call within five minutes. The prompt action of the fire department, combined with collaborative efforts from various agencies, ensured the safety of residents and minimized property damage, according to a Thursday MFD release.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed visual alarms and water emanating from the upper floors
of the building. Despite the activation of the building’s sprinkler system, MFD conducted a comprehensive search of the premises to ensure all occupants were accounted for.

The fire, which was contained to its area of origin, had been extinguished prior to the fire
department’s arrival, demonstrating the effectiveness of the sprinkler system, the department said.

MFD coordinated with other emergency responders, including the Moline Police Department, East Moline Police Department, MidAmerican Energy, American Red Cross, and a water mitigation company, to provide additional assistance.

Together, they facilitated the relocation of all affected families and ensured their immediate needs were met. Remarkably, there were no reported injuries among firefighters or civilians at the scene, underscoring the efficiency and professionalism of the response efforts, the city department said.

The MFD’s Fire Prevention and Investigation Bureau initiated a thorough investigation into
the incident, classifying the fire as intentional. Ultimately, a suspect was apprehended
shortly after the incident. Anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to contact Fire
Marshal Mitch Cunningham at 309-524-2266.

Due to ongoing investigations, no further details are available at this time.
